Egypt showcases water megaprojects powering Sinai agriculture, development

Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has highlighted a series of major water projects in the Sinai Peninsula as central to boosting agricultural expansion and strengthening food security, marking Sinai Liberation Day.

In a statement, Water Minister Hani Sewilam said the government is advancing large-scale water management initiatives as part of a broader strategy to drive sustainable development in Sinai.

Among the flagship projects is the Bahr El-Baqar water treatment plant, with a capacity of around 5.6 million cubic metres per day. The facility is one of the largest agricultural wastewater treatment plants globally, enabling the reuse of treated water for irrigation in North and Central Sinai.

The ministry said work is progressing on two major water conveyance routes, now approximately 88% complete, which are expected to support the irrigation of around 270,000 feddans under the North Sinai development programme.

In parallel, 24 intake points are being developed along the Sheikh Jaber Canal to irrigate about 125,000 feddans in Rabaa and Bir El-Abd. Of these, 21 have been completed, with the remainder nearing finalisation alongside ongoing trial operations and electrification.

Egypt has also established 16 integrated development clusters across North and South Sinai, incorporating groundwater wells, agricultural land, housing units, and essential service facilities to support local communities and encourage settlement.

On the resilience front, the ministry has implemented 561 flood protection projects across Sinai, including dams, barriers, channels, and artificial lakes. These structures aim to safeguard infrastructure and communities, while capturing rainwater for reuse and helping to recharge groundwater reserves.

The ministry said these initiatives are part of a comprehensive national effort to advance sustainable development in Sinai through efficient water resource management and the expansion of cultivable land.
